December 1, 2010: World AIDS Day

Facts and Stats

HIV: The basics

What is HIV?

HIV is a virus that attacks the body's immune system - the body's defence against diseases.

Are HIV and AIDS the same?

No. When someone is described as living with HIV, they have the HIV virus in their body. A person is considered to have developed AIDS when the immune system is so weak it can no longer fight off a range of diseases with which it would normally cope.

December 17, 2010 Eat Real Day.

Commit to eating healthy on December 17th.

What's Eat Real Day?

Simple - no fast food on December 17th.

We all know the dangers of processed & pre-cooked fast food - to our health, to the animals, to the climate and to society.

Toronto and nearby cities have a multitude of good and diverse food to try from family-owned stores and restaurants and other unique small businesses. Try something from one, buy from a Farmer's Market or get some healthy local food for the day and try a new meal with friends - it doesn't have to be expensive either.

We have a broken food system. Let's do something about it, and start a discussion. Let's get the economy and our governments to act for health.

And see how the alternative tastes.  Please invite your friends.  Please visit the Facebook event for No Fast Food Day and invite your friends.

Chinese police force Nobel Peace Prize winner's wife to leave home

The 2010 Nobel Peace Prize winner's wife Liu Xia was being forced to leave her home in Beijing by plainclothes police officers Friday, she told Reuters during a phone interview shortly after the prize was awarded.

The officers said they wanted to take Liu to the prison in Jinzhou in the northeastern province of Liaoning, where her husband Liu Xiaobo is being held in an apparent effort to prevent foreign reporters from speaking to her, she said.

Vague Response from Rob Ford

A Toronto resident was not impressed with the 'vague response' she received from Rob Ford after she sent him an email asking him about bike lanes in the city. Cathy Besso did get an actual reply from Mr. Ford, something I have to say is quite impressive considering the track record of Ward 27 councilor Kyle Rae who seems to think now that we've paid for his retirement party that a reply to an email is beneath him. However, I digress. Cathy got  a FORM letter from Rob Ford which according to The Star, stated;

“Insert vague response on policy,”
I suggest voters give Rob Ford a vague response at the polls on October 25th!
At last check Mr. Ford had not made any comment or response.

Sunday In The Park Dancers

This is a little video I shot of dancers performing a traditional African harvest dance (I forget which country) at Sunday In The Park a couple of weeks ago. I'm experimenting with shooting some video myself rather than having to call upon my professional talent.

A better camera or at least a tripod will certainly be employed next time, but I'm very, very happy with the video intro that David has created for me.

What do you think?
