Food for Thought: African Lions are Not a Main Course

Washington, D.C. (May 21, 2013) – Jeffrey Flocken, North American Regional Director, International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), issued the following statement regarding the serving of lion meat at restaurants across the country:

“It is extremely worrisome to see restaurants across the country promoting the sale and consumption of lion meat. The African lion population already faces many obstacles for survival: a restaurant’s choice to serve up lion meat is simply irresponsible. 

As we witnessed at eateries Taco Fusion (Tampa, Florida) and Mokutanya Yakitori (Burlingame, California) in the last couple of weeks, and many other establishments over the last few years, customers respond negatively to publicity ploys like novelty meats. Modern history shows that almost every restaurant serving lion meat has pulled it from their menu as a direct result of public backlash. A recent Synovate poll found that 63 percent of Americans would stop frequenting an establishment if it started serving lion meat.

 The African lion population has declined by more than 50 percent over the last three decades, and as few as 32,000 remain in the wild. 

In March 2011 IFAW, along with a coalition of animal welfare organizations, petitioned the U.S. government to list the African lion as an endangered species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. If listed, serving African lion meat in the U.S. would be illegal.

Restaurants serving lion meat send a message that they promote exploiting endangered animals. It not only alienates their customers, but it undermines conservation of this iconic species which is already fighting to survive. For any restaurants considering serving the meat of this imperiled species, we urge you to reconsider: African lions must be conserved, not consumed.”

Why gay marriage is "wrong".

1) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

02) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

03) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

04) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

05) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

06) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

07) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

08) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

09) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

John McCain says 9-11 terrorists came from Canada

John McCain is the latest high-profile politician to repeat the diehard American falsehood that the 9-11 terrorists entered the United States through Canada.

Just days after Janet Napolitano, the U.S. homeland security secretary, sparked a diplomatic kerfuffle by suggesting the terrorists took a Canadian route to the U.S. eight years ago, McCain defended her by saying that, in fact, the former Arizona governor was correct. Full Story

Vermont Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage

Vermont has become the fourth U.S. state to legalize same-sex marriage, after a dramatic vote in its legislature Tuesday.

The House voted 100-49 — barely beating the two-thirds level needed — to override Gov. Jim Douglas's veto of a bill allowing gays and lesbians to tie the knot.

The vote followed a much easier override vote in the state Senate, which early voted 23-5 to rebuff the Republican governor's attempt to kill the bill.

Vermont was the first state to legalize civil unions for same-sex couples; it now joins Connecticut, Massachusetts and Iowa in giving gays the right to marry outright. In those three states, the courts were responsible for instituting the change by ruling on legal challenges.

Americas Greatest Threat?

Utah State Senator Chris Buttars recently called the LGBT community "probably the greatest threat to America...I know of." He went on to spew a series of vile insults including:

* Lesbian and gay relationships are "abominations."
* LGBT people are moving America "toward a society that has no morals."
* LGBT people will "destroy the foundation of American society."

Comments like this spread ignorance and fear – promoting an atmosphere of violence against LGBT Americans. They have no place in the discourse of our elected officials.

Please send the letter below to Sen. Michael Waddoups, President of the Utah State Senate, and call on him to condemn Sen. Buttars' remarks and censure him officially.

Is it just me or is America stuck in a bit of a time warp? Come on people get real and join the rest of the world in the 21st century. Really, who cares about a few college kids and Michael Phelps smoking dope?

It seems the facist pigs, I mean, the Richland County Sheriff's Office have charged two people, the guys who were renting the house where the pot party occurred.

According to one of the lawyers representing one of the accused in the heinous crime, "After they arrested him, they didn't ask him, 'Where did you get the marijuana?' or 'Who sold it to you?' Almost all the questions they asked him were about Michael Phelps."

The lawyers would not name their clients, who each face up to 30 days in jail and a US$200 fine if convicted on the pending charges.

This is an ongoing human security project which maintains and updates the world’s only independent and comprehensive public database of media-reported civilian deaths in Iraq that have resulted from the 2003 military intervention by the USA and its allies. The count includes civilian deaths caused by coalition military action and by military or paramilitary responses to the coalition presence (e.g. insurgent and terrorist attacks). It also includes excess civilian deaths caused by criminal action resulting from the breakdown in law and order which followed the coalition invasion.

Results and totals are continually updated and made immediately available here and on various IBC web counters which may be freely displayed on any website or homepage, where they are automatically updated without further intervention. Casualty figures are derived from a comprehensive survey of online media reports from recognized sources. Where these sources report differing figures, the range (a minimum and a maximum) are given. This method is also used to deal with any residual uncertainty about the civilian or non-combatant status of the dead. All results are independently reviewed and error-checked by at least three members of the Iraq Body Count project team before publication.
