Liberals put Party before public with gas plant scandal
Queen’s Park - GPO leader Mike Schreiner issued the following statement in response to today’s Auditor General’s report:
“The Liberal government’s short-term thinking and self-interested political games have cost us a billion dollars and made a mess of Ontario’s energy future.
The Liberal’s gas plant scandal is politics at its worst. Self-interested quick fixes and a third-rate cover up have produced enormous financial costs, paralyzed the legislature and undermined public trust in democracy. The Liberals have put their party before the public.
Ontario needs a long-term energy plan. Instead, the Liberals lurch from one quick fix to another. They are more interested in buying votes than securing our children’s future.
Without a long-term plan, they’ve failed to site gas plants properly.
They have failed to implement renewable energy properly.
They have failed to pursue conservation programs properly.
They have failed to negotiate gas plant relocations properly.
And now the Liberals are blindly moving forward with plans to waste billions on new nuclear.
After failing to negotiate responsibly on moving gas plants, it is outrageous for this government to commit billions to new nuclear without an independent review of costs or alternatives.
Can we trust this government with our energy future? The Liberal government's energy planning seems to be driven by what works for the Liberal Party, not for the people of Ontario.
It is important to remember that the Holland Marsh gas plant, located near homes, schools and prime farmland, faced significant local opposition. It was not relocated. It is in a Conservative held riding.
The status quo is broken. We must demand better.
The Green Party will continue to fight for a long-term energy plan that engages communities in solutions that don’t waste money and provides for our energy needs today and in the future.”

Strong Action, Strong Leader? Strong Response.
The following is an edited version of Premier McGuinty's letter to Ontarians. My comments in italics.

This is quite a place, our Ontario. (almost 8% unemployment, discriminatory schools, lack of social housing, worst gridlock in North America).
We are, all of us, blessed to live in the greatest province in the best country in the world (just don’t tell the Americans, the unemployed or those trying to live on $599 per month).
Our public schools now rank the best in the English-speaking world.
Our hospitals now have the shortest surgical wait times in the country. (Hopefully, you won’t be wanting any drugs with your surgery).
Even our economy, in the midst of a punishing global recession, has created nearly half the new jobs in Canada, and more new jobs than any of our neighbouring (Unemployment: Why Canada is trailing the U.S. on jobs. March 9, 2012: The Star. ) states.
These things didn't happen by accident. We didn't get lucky. No shit, Sherlock!
Working together, we made our publicly funded Catholic schools and our hospitals better (e-health. [1B Waste] and ORNGE ), and our economy stronger (Samsung thanks you).
But now, years of Liberal government over-spending, the recession and continued global economic uncertainty have left us with a problem: a stubborn deficit that threatens economic growth and job creation, and puts our publicly funded Catholic schools, our health care, and our very quality of life (a luxurious $599 per month for Ontario Works recipients) at risk.
We can't allow this deficit created by Dalton McGuinty and the Liberals to defeat us. And we won't.
Our strong plan will eliminate the deficit by Ontario's and Canada's 150th anniversary, on July 1, 2017. (Unless there is a 1 point increase in interest rates, among many other variables).
It won't be pretty. It won't be easy. But we will succeed.
We'll make difficult decisions and tough choices.
Sacrifices will be made. But not on the backs of the top paid CEO’s who will still get their bonuses.
But then who among us didn't grow up hearing of the hardships and sacrifices our parents and grandparents made to create a better life for us. (I recall my Mom telling me how people could walk out of high school and into a factory or office and get a job in the 60’s. As for my grandparents, we’ve all heard stories of how the economy was booming after WWII).
Well, now it's our turn. Time for our generation to stand up and take action.
We will do whatever it takes to protect the gains we've made in our publicly funded Catholic schools and our “health care” that treats illness, instead of focusing on prevention.
We'll do whatever we need to do to preserve what is so very special about this place. Special treatment for the top paid CEO’s, putting the onus of economic recovery on the backs of our poorest citizens and allowing discrimination to continue against students and teachers, in our schools and 7.4% unemployment (Compared with 12 months earlier, employment was up by 121,000. )
And we'll do it together. (Unless your a non-catholic teacher) Because that's the way we do things around here.
Together. We can do this. We're Ontario.

Sign the petition: Hands off our CBC
Only you can stop devastating Conservative cuts to our cherished public broadcaster
The Conservative government has begun a campaign against the CBC.
Consider this pattern of behavior.
It starts with a broken promise:
Heritage Minister James Moore recently announced upcoming cuts of up to $110 Million to the CBC.
This
is completely contrary to the promises he made prior to the election.
“We made a simple, specific promise to Canadians in the last election to
maintain or increase funding to the CBC,” Mr. Moore said in February.
It didn’t take him long to break his promise to Canadians. Last month he
announced a 5% cut to CBC’s budget, this month he is announcing it’s
10%. Who knows how much further Harper’s Conservatives will go.
Consider this pattern of behavior.

Green Act hits wind shear
The Ontario Liberals deserve credit for getting it half right. The Samsung sweetheart deal and the Green Energy Act are good for the planet (NOW, January 28-February 3) but bad for the economy.
The McGuinty Liberals now subsidize green electricity and dirty electricity but continue to ignore accurate pricing and conservation, critical parts of achieving a 100 per cent green grid.
Coal-generated electricity is subsidized by hidden climate change costs and by the health care costs resulting from dirty air.
Nuclear is subsidized by the cost of past nuke debt, limited liability, future decommissioning costs, etc.
If Ontario charged the accurate cost of electricity, wind power would not require feed-in tariffs, other renewables would be much closer to viability, and revenue from true-cost electricity accounting could be used to reduce income taxes.

Bureaucrats skirt rules to hide huge salaries
Hefty salaries for some of Ontario's highest paid civil servants – including the deputy health minister, who earned nearly $500,000 last year in salary and taxable benefits – are being channelled through hospitals to skirt government pay guidelines, the Star has learned.
As Premier Dalton McGuinty's administration clamps down on untendered contracts and consultants' meal expenses in the wake of the eHealth Ontario spending scandal, salaries for top bureaucrats are being buried in hospital budgets.

Here we go again. Looks like Dalton isn't interested in getting re-elected considering his government has seen one spending scandal after another recently. Personally, I'm sick and tired of his governments abuse of OUR money!
