Thousands of Cyclists Take Over Bloor Street

I took part in the Bells on Bloor musical ride today with thousands of other cyclists who rode from High Park in the west end of Toronto to Queens Park downtown.

Bells on Bloor is a ride designed to send a message to city politicians that bike lanes are needed on Bloor street. Many studies have been done over the past years which indicate the best east-west main route for cyclists in Toronto is Bloor St.

Shamefully the city has done a major redevelopment through the 'mink mile' on Bloor street from Church street to Avenue road without including any bike lanes and even removing the bike posts that used to exist. This is the same stretch of road where bike courier Darcy Allen Sheppard was killed in a mishap with former Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant.

  1. I totally forgot about this when I posted earlier, but on my way to High Park a van pulled out of a small side street on to Bloor, I saw him coming, and also saw him NOT look to the left at all. Hit my brakes hard and stopped literally an inch from his van. On my lurch forward my hand slammed into the side of his van, which at least let him know that he almost caused a crash. This city is dangerous for cyclists and we really need to push for proper lanes and ALL of us need to work harder at sharing the streets.
