1747 – The London Lock Hospital, the first clinic specialising in the treatment of venereal diseases, opened.

Coronation Street, Britain's longest-running television soap opera and its consistently highest-rating programme, was first broadcast on Friday December 9, 1960 on ITV, where it continues to be scheduled.
