Green Party of ON - 5 Point Plan

On May 25th, Green Party of Ontario (GPO) leader Mike Schreiner, alongside fellow candidates, shadow cabinet members and supporters, released the 2011 Provincial Election Platform. Mike presented the GPO's five-point plan for Ontario's future, a bold vision for building a financially, socially and environmentally sustainable province for all Ontarians. If you weren't able to attend the platofrm launch at Queen's Park, you can see the video online from the convenience of your home or office.

We made history on May 2nd, permanently changing the Canadian political landscape. The election of Elizabeth May as our first Green MP to the House of Commons is an accomplishment we can all be proud of. We have proven that it is very possible to win seats within our current electoral system, just as Caroline Lucas in the UK and Adam Bandt in Australia have done.

Here in Ontario, the GPO is eager to build on our historic moment. With the federal election behind us, we hope you can now look towards the Ontario provincial election just over four months away. To that end, the GPO's five-point plan - found at www.itstimeforgreen.ca - is the next step in building upon our historic feat:

  1. Creating jobs for a 21st-century economy;
  2. Harnessing safe, affordable energy to power our communities;
  3. Promoting access to quality, sustainable health care close to home;
  4. Feeding our communities by championing local farms; and
  5. Delivering government that works for people.
To get your free copy of the GPO's election platform, come to one of the provincial platform launch events, or request a copy by filling out the online order form.

Priest Sex-Abuse Case Hits Church of Pope's Adviser

Priest Sex-Abuse Case Hits Church of Pope's Adviser

The latest sex-abuse case to rock the Catholic Church is unfolding in the archdiocese of an influential Italian Cardinal who has been working with Pope Benedict XVI on reforms to respond to prior scandals of pedophile priests.

Father Riccardo Seppia, a 51-year-old parish priest in the village of Sastri Ponente, near Genoa, was arrested last Friday, May 13, on pedophilia and drug charges. Investigators say that in tapped mobile-phone conversations, Seppia asked a Moroccan drug dealer to arrange sexual encounters with young and vulnerable boys. "I do not want 16-year-old boys but younger. Fourteen-year-olds are O.K. Look for needy boys who have family issues," he allegedly said. Genoa Archbishop Angelo Bagnasco, who is the head of the Italian Bishops Conference, had been working with Benedict to establish a tough new worldwide policy, released this week, on how bishops should handle accusations of priestly sex abuse.

TheStar Ontario Greens aim for ‘beachhead’ in fall vote

Robert Benzie Queen’s Park Bureau Chief

Ontario’s Green Party has modest political hopes for the fall election, but major policy goals.

Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner said while he would be satisfied winning one of the province’s 107 seats in the Oct. 6 vote, his campaign platform is far more ambitious.

On Wednesday, Schreiner touted a British Columbia-style carbon tax of 2.4 cents per litre of gasoline, an end to nuclear power, a single secular public school system, and frozen wages for public servants through 2015.

Buoyed by national Green Party Leader Elizabeth May winning a seat in the May 2 federal election, he hopes to repeat the feat provincially.

Towel Day May 25, 2011

Today is the 10th international Towel Day, commemorating the life and works of the writer Douglas Adams. Adams is best known for creating The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a humorous epic set in the very near future about the adventures of an ordinary chap who turns out to be one of the few human survivors after Earth is destroyed to make may for a new intergalactic highway. The Hitchhiker's Guide is a book of advice for interplanetary seekers, and includes the inarguable counsel (familiar to many travelers) to always know the location of your towel. Hitchhiker's Guide (Or H2G2 as it's known to fans) started out as a BBC radio series in the late 1970s, then a series of books, then a TV adaptation. A feature film was released in 2005, four years after Adams' untimely death from a heart attack, aged 49.

Would-be Tory candidates muscled out by Hudak favourites

TheStar Would-be Tory candidates muscled out by Hudak favourites

Would-be Progressive Conservative candidates are being flatly told to hit the road to make way for hand-picked favourites, the Star has learned.

The latest to get the hook is Ade Olumide, a candidate for the Tory nomination in Ottawa West—Nepean, who was eager to butt heads with Randall Denley, a long-time Ottawa Citizen columnist personally anointed by Leader Tim Hudak.

“I was informed (Tuesday) night by the president of the Ontario PC Party in writing that I will not be allowed to contest the party nomination in Ottawa West Nepean,” said Olumide, founder of the Ottawa Taxpayer Advocacy Group, in an email Wednesday.

“To my volunteers, members and supporters I say a heart felt thank you; I recognize this news is very disappointing,” said Olumide.

The reign of terror, as one insider called it, comes as the party, which conceivably could form the next Ontario government, searches for candidates for 107 ridings.

Anointing candidates started out as isolated practice but has become common as the Conservatives vie for candidates with name-recognition.

Included in the stable of so-called high-profile candidates is CHCH TV’s Donna Skelly, who was another one to be anointed at the expense of a long-time Conservative party member in Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale.

Several riding association members there quit because of the party meddling.

Tory Leader Tim Hudak defended the party’s screening process, saying sometime people don’t make the cut.

“Our party has a screening process to determine candidates fit the bill as a potential candidate and MPP. It’s an arm’s length process that looks at these decisions,” he told reporters at Queen’s Park, insisting it is an open process.

According to party insiders that’s not the case at all, noting that the Ottawa-West Nepean riding association didn’t even know that the three existing candidates were being strong-armed by party officials to pull out of the race.

“Seems to be a bizarre reign of terror,” said one party insider.

It still sticks in the craw in Tory caucus members and party faithful that Hudak stood by and watched Norm Sterling, a veteran Progressive Conservative MPP and former cabinet minister, get stripped of the nomination for the riding of Carleton- Mississippi Mills by Ontario Landowners Association activist and cash-crop farmer Jack MacLaren.

“I really was upset at the way it went down,” MPP Bill Murdoch (Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound) told the Star.

Political observers from the Belleville area are expecting the next shoe to drop when Todd Smith, a local radio personality, gets tapped by Hudak to run in Prince Edward-Hastings against Liberal cabinet minister Leona Dombrosky.

Old Parties Present False Choices on Green Energy

Tory Leader Tim Hudak’s pledge to scrap the Feed-In Tariff (FIT) program is a slap in the face to businesses, individuals, First Nations and community groups investing in safe, renewable energy projects. His pledge to cancel energy contracts already in place irresponsibly damages Ontario’s ability to attract investors and new businesses.

Also flawed is Premier Dalton McGuinty’s approach to energy - backroom corporate deals and disrespect for the decision-making authority of municipalities, informed by local citizens. Sensible energy policy should benefit local communities first and ensure an investment climate that is fair, open and transparent.

The Green Party of Ontario puts people and communities first, offering a sensible choice for voters who support a safe, affordable energy future. McGuinty’s special deal for Samsung has meant that local businesses, individuals and community groups cannot access the grid, and Hudak’s short-sighted pledge risks a growing Ontario industry, turning back the clock on energy policy.  Businesses require stability in order to succeed, something the old parties at Queen’s Park seem intent on ignoring.

Mike Schreiner, Leader GPO
Greens will not irresponsibly cancel contracts without a clear understanding of the costs and the effects on business investment and jobs. Green MPPs elected on October 6th will stand up for a sensible energy plan that puts communities first by restoring local decision making, requiring local ownership and ensuring local benefits for energy projects.

A sensible energy plan invests in energy efficiency and conservation as the most cost effective way to provide Ontarians long-term relief from rising energy prices. Conservation programs not only save Ontarians money today, but tomorrow and ten years from now. It’s time to elect Green MPPs who will fight for simple, transparent and fair rules that put communities first.

Action Alert: Stop Passage of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill

Conservative lawmakers in Uganda have revived the Anti-Homosexuality bill that made headlines last year. A vote on the bill could happen in the next 72 hours, which is why an outcry from the international community is critical now.

Most notably, the bill would punish “aggravated homosexuality”–meaning homosexual activity by “serial offenders” or those who are HIV positive–with the death penalty.

To take action, sign a letter directed at Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, who can stop the bill’s passage with a veto.

Third try’s a charm for Elizabeth May

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May became her party's first elected MP Monday night, the first Green in history in the House of Commons, after winning the Saanich Gulf Island riding on the west coast.
May took the seat from Conservative Gary Lunn — who had held the seat for 14 years — by almost 15 per cent more votes than the incumbent, a decisive win in a campaign that was an all-or-nothing gamble for the party.
It was a gamble that paid off.
This was May's third attempt at gaining a seat for herself and the Green Party, a perennial also-ran in ridings across the country.
Now more than ever with the Conservatives winning a majority, May said that the Green Party's voice is needed in Parliament.

“This is definitely going to be a much more aggressive and unrestrained government,” she said Monday night.
May won her seat after the Green Party poured in support into the riding in hopes of winning the party's first ever seat. The strategy worked for May even though it cost the party overall in popular support.
Last time, the Greens reached a high of 6.8 per cent of the popular vote but this time garnered only 4 per cent of the vote across the country.
“This campaign has been about commitment, passion, enthusiasm and excitement we could all feel that something different was happening,” May said to a crowd of over 800 supporters who gathered in a Sidney airplane hanger to hear the results Monday night.
May held the lead in her riding early on and her supporters broke into song once she was officially declared the winner singing This Land is Your Land, hugging and dancing in excitement.
