Tsunami Advisory for British Columbia and Pacific Rim

The Canadian Press is reporting a tsunami advisory has been issued for all of coastal British Columbia following Saturday’s 8.8 earthquake in Chile. The quake is one of the strongest every recorded.
The West Coast Alaska Tsunami Warning Center says a tsunami advisory means there is a possibility of strong localized currents.
No significant inundation is expected, but low-lying coastal areas and beaches are at risk.
The provincial emergency system says experts predict the first wave arrival time of 15:11 PST at the southern B.C. coastline.
It says local governments may consider activating their emergency plans, including evacuating marinas, beaches and other areas that are below normal high-tide mark.
A stronger tsunami warning was issued earlier Saturday for a wide swath of the Pacific, including Hawaii, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

Save The South Side of Colborne St.

Please find included a link to the petition as noted above which is to appeal to the Minister of Culture to exercise its authority to issue a stop work order on the impending demolition of the buildings on the South Side of Colborne Street, Brantford. Read about it at Urban Toronto.com

This is rather urgent so please, if you wish to sign, do so as soon as you're able to. If we can obtain as many signatures as possible within the next week, it would be most helpful.

A copy of the petition will also be made available to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing which is the umbrella organization which is responsible for land use planning in the Province of Ontario.

Voters should think Green

Party provides real political alternative
BY RANDALL DENLEY, THE OTTAWA CITIZEN

Life seems a tiny bit unfair for voters in Eastern Ontario's two provincial byelections. Like kids with a detention, they have been assigned to pay attention to provincial politics while the rest of us get to focus on the Olympics.

People in Ottawa West-Nepean and Leeds-Grenville have the dreary assignment of weighing the merits of the political parties. That can be depressing. There are the Liberals, with their scandals and broken promises; the PCs, still trying to figure out who they are; and the NDP, for those who think we don't have enough socialism and big government.

Fortunately, for voters who are sick of all of this, there is one other alternative, although it's probably not top of mind. Yes, Ontario does have a Green party and it has fielded solid candidates in both ridings. Better, it has a leader who comes across as a normal person, not a politician. Better yet, the Greens have policies that are much more in sync with real life than those of their competitors.

The Greens' new leader, Mike Schreiner, has released a platform aimed at Eastern Ontario. Imagine some political party thinking of us. Schreiner and the Greens are talking about the kinds of things that are actually on people's minds like the food we eat and where it comes from, doing more for the environment, the energy efficiency of our homes and our right to make decisions for our own communities. It's an attractive blend of populism and environmentalism.

The Greens naturally advocate more green jobs and a green building program, but their focus is on small Ontario manufacturers with new technologies and homeowners or builders who want to increase energy conservation. It's about what you can do, not what a South Korean multinational corporation like Samsung can do.

The whole focus of the Ontario Green party is on local, community-based decision making. It's a sharp contrast to the top-down management favoured by the Liberals and the PCs before them. The underlying idea is that people are smart enough to figure out what's best for their communities without a lot of paternalistic advice from government.

Not every detail of the Green platform is entirely convincing. For example, the Greens want to lower taxes on work and increase taxes on behaviour. Government might make up the lost income taxes by taking in more in new taxes on fuel-consuming vehicles or over-packaged products. It sounds attractive, but if people actually respond to the incentive it would quickly erode the government's tax base.

In Ottawa West-Nepean, the Green candidate is Mark MacKenzie. He's the sort of grey-haired, well-dressed business guy the PCs would have loved to get as a candidate. MacKenzie, who runs an organic-lawn-care company, is articulate and passionate about the Greens and the possibility of change.

Neil Kudrinko is the Green candidate in Leeds-Grenville. A former Eastern Ontario president of the federal Liberal party, Kudrinko switched to the Greens because the other parties don't have a good grasp of what rural ridings like his really need. As the operator of a family-run grocery store, Kudrinko sees firsthand how difficult it is for Ontario farmers to get their products into the marketplace. Agricultural innovation and sustainable rural communities are his interests.

For the conventional parties, it's all about gaining and holding power. Platforms are tailored to boost election prospects. In other words, it's about them, not us. The Greens actually believe in the ideas they present. It's closer to a social movement than a political party, but the Greens are professionalizing their approach. Schreiner is their first full-time leader and he has been spending time at Queen's Park, making himself available to the media. He is campaigning actively with his candidates in Eastern Ontario.

The Greens would seem to have stiff competition from the Ontario Liberals, who use the word "green" every chance they get. The problem is that Premier Dalton McGuinty acts like doing anything green is some kind of social cod-liver oil that he is going to make us swallow because only he understands that it's good for us. McGuinty's policies aren't tapping into people's innate desire to be better environmental stewards.

The outcome of Eastern Ontario's two byelections is regarded by most as a foregone conclusion. The Liberals will retain their Ottawa West-Nepean seat and the PCs will maintain their hold on Leeds-Grenville. Voters, ask yourself what they have done to deserve your endorsement. Maybe it's time to send a message to both parties by voting Green.

Regulations at root of problem, Ontario Green Party leader says

Regulations and tax rules need to be reformed so farmers can sell their products in local markets, Ontario Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner said here yesterday.
"We want to support prosperous, vibrant local economies and communities," Schreiner said.
Schreiner joined Leeds-Grenville Green candidate Neil Kudrinko in a byelection campaign event at Countryman's Estate Winery.
The winery's owners, Gene and Marsha Countryman, have been involved in a protracted dispute with Farm Credit Canada, which holds an overdue mortgage on the Countrymans' farm and residence.
Kudrinko said the Countrymans' winery is struggling because it cannot place its product adequately on the market, and that is just one example of a small Ontario farmer facing "overbearing regulations."
"The Countrymans' situation exemplifies what's wrong with Ontario agriculture today," said Kudrinko.
"It's forgotten the relationship between the producer and the consumer."
Kudrinko is one of four candidates hoping to succeed former MPP Bob Runciman in a March 4 byelection. Runciman was recently appointed to the federal Senate.

Rogers NOT Racist, so who is?

I have received a response from Rogers regarding the post yesterday about the description of the movie 'A Mighty Heart' which was airing on Showcase yesterday afternoon.  I still have heard nothing from Showcase.  Rogers says they DO NOT write the descriptions.  Here is the content of their email message to me followed by my photograph of the racist movie description.

Dear Mark Daye,
At this time, we regret to inform you that Rogers is only the cable service provider. We do not have access to the programming options for each channel, nor do we have control over what is added to the movie description. It is up to each individual program company to provide us with this information and we input this information into the interactive programming guide for your use. I have escalated this issue to be fixed.

I took this picture a few minutes ago, the movie 'A Mighty Heart' was playing on Showcase HD, to which Rogers is giving a free preview weekend.

I'm not sure what the scoop is, I tried to ask Rogers but since they don't have live people working for them, all I could do was submit a form. I will let you know what they say, if they bother to respond.

We Are More

We Are More
by Shane Koyczan
When defining Canada
you might list some statistics
you might mention our tallest building
or biggest lake
you might shake a tree in the fall
and call a red leaf Canada
you might rattle off some celebrities
might mention Buffy Sainte-Marie
might even mention the fact that we've got a few
Barenaked Ladies
or that we made these crazy things
like zippers
electric cars
and washing machines
when defining Canada
it seems the world's anthem has been
" been there done that"
and maybe that's where we used to be at
it's true
we've done and we've been
we've seen
all the great themes get swallowed up by the machine
and turned into theme parks
but when defining Canada
don't forget to mention that we have set sparks
we are not just fishing stories
about the one that got away
we do more than sit around and say "eh?"
and yes
we are the home of the Rocket and the Great One
who inspired little number nines
and little number ninety-nines
but we're more than just hockey and fishing lines
off of the rocky coast of the Maritimes
and some say what defines us
is something as simple as please and thank you
and as for you're welcome
well we say that too
but we are more
than genteel or civilized
we are an idea in the process
of being realized
we are young
we are cultures strung together
then woven into a tapestry
and the design
is what makes us more
than the sum total of our history
we are an experiment going right for a change
with influences that range from a to zed
and yes we say zed instead of zee
we are the colours of Chinatown and the coffee of Little Italy
we dream so big that there are those
who would call our ambition an industry
because we are more than sticky maple syrup and clean snow
we do more than grow wheat and brew beer
we are vineyards of good year after good year
we reforest what we clear
because we believe in generations beyond our own
knowing now that so many of us
have grown past what used to be
we can stand here today
filled with all the hope people have
when they say things like "someday"
someday we'll be great
someday we'll be this
or that
someday we'll be at a point
when someday was yesterday
and all of our aspirations will pay the way
for those who on that day
look towards tomorrow
and still they say someday
we will reach the goals we set
and we will get interest on our inspiration
because we are more than a nation of whale watchers and lumberjacks
more than backpacks and hiking trails
we are hammers and nails building bridges
towards those who are willing to walk across
we are the lost-and-found for all those who might find themselves at a loss
we are not the see-through gloss or glamour
of those who clamour for the failings of others
we are fathers brothers sisters and mothers
uncles and nephews aunts and nieces
we are cousins
we are found missing puzzle pieces
we are families with room at the table for newcomers
we are more than summers and winters
more than on and off seasons
we are the reasons people have for wanting to stay
because we are more than what we say or do
we live to get past what we go through
and learn who we are
we are students
students who study the studiousness of studying
so we know what as well as why
we don't have all the answers
but we try
and the effort is what makes us more
we don't all know what it is in life we're looking for
so keep exploring
go far and wide
or go inside but go deep
go deep
as if James Cameron was filming a sequel to The Abyss
and suddenly there was this location scout
trying to figure some way out
to get inside you
because you've been through hell and high water
and you went deep
keep exploring
because we are more
than a laundry list of things to do and places to see
we are more than hills to ski
or countryside ponds to skate
we are the abandoned hesitation of all those who can't wait
we are first-rate greasy-spoon diners and healthy-living cafes
a country that is all the ways you choose to live
a land that can give you variety
because we are choices
we are millions upon millions of voices shouting
" keep exploring... we are more"
we are the surprise the world has in store for you
it's true
Canada is the "what" in "what's new?"
so don't say "been there done that"
unless you've sat on the sidewalk
while chalk artists draw still lifes
on the concrete of a kid in the street
beatboxing to Neil Young for fun
don't say you've been there done that
unless you've been here doing it
let this country be your first-aid kit
for all the times you get sick of the same old same old
let us be the story told to your friends
and when that story ends
leave chapters for the next time you'll come back
next time pack for all the things
you didn't pack for the first time
but don't let your luggage define your travels
each life unravels differently
and experiences are what make up
the colours of our tapestry
we are the true north
strong and free
and what's more
is that we didn't just say it
we made it be.

Longtime NHL enforcer Georges Laraque getting involved with Green party

Hockey tough guy Georges Laraque has a history of pummelling opponents until they're black and blue.
Now the longtime NHL enforcer is going Green.
The Canadian Press - Montreal - Newly released by the Montreal Canadiens, the longtime hockey scrapper is now putting his efforts in service of the Green Party of Canada.
Laraque will announce his plans to get involved with the environmental party at an event in Montreal on Saturday.
A Green party official said he would not be announcing plans Saturday to run for the party in an election, but would be discussing other ways he will contribute.
The party announced the Laraque event in a statement Friday.
The statement said Laraque will hold a public screening of the film Earthlings, and then make an announcement.
Laraque has already credited that film, which is about the exploitation of animals, for spurring him on in his public fight against puppy mills.
The 13-year NHL veteran has also become a vegan, meaning he eats no meat or other products derived from animals, like milk and cheese.
Laraque was released by the Habs last month, right after scoring his only goal in two seasons with the team.

Dangerous Lotto Max TV Advertisement

If you have watched television at all recently you have probably seen this commercial. Textingwhile driving a car is plain stupid, doing it while driving a powerboat or helicopter is completely insane. Did the morons who created this ad not see the train crash in California last year? If you want to submit a complaint yourself click here.
I should make it clear, the above commercial is for the Atlantic lottery, but OLG is running the same ad. I'm sure it is running across the country.

Green Act hits wind shear

The Ontario Liberals deserve credit for getting it half right. The Samsung sweetheart deal and the Green Energy Act are good for the planet (NOW, January 28-February 3) but bad for the economy.
The McGuinty Liberals now subsidize green electricity and dirty electricity but continue to ignore accurate pricing and conservation, critical parts of achieving a 100 per cent green grid.

Coal-generated electricity is subsidized by hidden climate change costs and by the health care costs resulting from dirty air.

Nuclear is subsidized by the cost of past nuke debt, limited liability, future decommissioning costs, etc.

If Ontario charged the accurate cost of electricity, wind power would not require feed-in tariffs, other renewables would be much closer to viability, and revenue from true-cost electricity accounting could be used to reduce income taxes.

Saturday Update

It's been a few days since I last posted, been pretty busy with work and lots of Green party work. So here's a little update.

Of course we had our Toronto Centre by-election with the Liberals purchasing the seat for former NDP man Glen Murray.  In what was seen as a last ditch effort to buy votes the McGuinty government coughed up $15 million to save the Grace hospitals.  NDP former street nurse Cathy Crowe placed a decent second while our own Green Party candidate Stefan Premdas finished with 3% of the vote.

The Green Party of Canada, Toronto Centre Annual General Meeting was held on Thursday night and I have taken on the roll of fundraising chair. It seemed like a natural fit since I am already organizing a fundraiser for the evening of February 25th. I'm super thrilled because Green Party leader Elizabeth May and Deputy leader Adrian Carr will both be attending along with our own wonderful candidate Ellen Michelson.  Keep watching this space for more info on this!  I'd love to have a full house and a wonderful show of support from our members in the GTA.

Here's a couple sites of interest that I heard about today, I hope you will check them out:

http://www.localmotiveproject.com/

http://www.greenpeace.org/canada/en/recent/eiffel-tower-anti-nuclear-protest

I was in Paris when the stars were on the tower. At the time I did not know that they were sponsored by a nuclear power company. When I look at my own pictures of the tower now I'll be reminded of nuclear power.

In an unrelated Olympic moment, I personally think is is disgusting and stupid to be moving snow and pumping tonnes of carbon into the air just so this big doped up business can carry on under the false banner of national pride.  Nothing about this scam makes me proud.
