Activists stop Cairn Energy rig drilling in the Arctic

Greenpeace campaigners have evaded a huge security operation and have scaled Cairn Energy's controversial oil rig in the Arctic seas off Greenland, shutting it down.

Edinburgh-based company Cairn Energy is actively drilling in the Arctic and holds eight oil exploration licenses off western and southwestern Greenland right in the middle of the Davis Straits - better known as 'iceberg alley'. Companies like Cairn and BP are desperate to pursue the last drops of oil on Earth, even if that means risking our environment and climate in the process.

Arctic drilling has got to stop! Tell Cairn's boss, Bill Gammell to stop drilling now.

Green Party urges NDP to vote for long gun registry.

The Green Party of Canada is urging members of Parliament to vote in favour of keeping the long gun registry, which the Conservative Party wants to scrap.  This week, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police voted unanimously to start an educational campaign about why the registry is so important to police officers and why they want to keep it. Other organizations such as the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians are chiming in with support for the registry.

"There is ample evidence that the long gun registry has been successful and is valued by those working in the field," Eric Walton, Member of  the Green Party Shadow Cabinet and nominated candidate Kingston-The Islands. "The ideology of the Conservative Party is the only motive behind scrapping this useful program.  Instead, Parliament should be working to improve our entire strategy for dealing with guns in Canada."

Alex Bozikovic has posted an informative article and very nice pictures of the new Toronto Community Housing building on his blog; nomeancity. The post is also featured on the Spacing Toronto blog. It is expected the building will attain Gold LEED certification, which is great news for the city and the environment. Along with being visually interesting the building features a centre atrium that will eventually be covered with green vines and such, bright hallways with windows and a couple of very nice courtyards. According to Toronto Community Housing 59 of the units are designated Regent Park replacement units. The building features one, two, three and even some four bedroom apartments.

In 200,000 years on Earth, humanity has upset the balance of the planet, established by nearly four billion years of evolution. The price to pay is high, but it's too late to be a pessimist: humanity has barely ten years to reverse the trend, become aware of the full extent of its spoliation of the Earth's riches and change its patterns of consumption.

Innu groups launch bid for injunction to block Hydro -Quebec's La Romaine project

Native groups have launched a legal bid to block a major hydro development in northeastern Quebec.
The Innu of Uashat and Mani-Utenam have filed a request for a temporary injunction to halt the Romaine River project.
They say the proposed development, and especially the planned transmission lines, run right through their ancestral territory and they never gave their consent.
The Innu describe their bid in Quebec Superior Court as an emergency move, while that same court prepares to hear the request they filed in 2009 for a permanent injunction.
The native groups do not want compensation; they are asking for the project to be scrubbed.
Hydro-Quebec says the project, located near Labrador in the Gulf of the St. Lawrence, could be completed by 2020 and add more than 1,500 megawatts to the grid.

Let Voters Fire The Mayor; Rossi

Citing the need to restore trust between angry voters and City Hall, Toronto mayoral candidate Rocco Rossi threw a curve into the mayor’s race today by announcing he would allow Toronto voters to recall their mayor and members of city council if they fail to live up to their promises.

Rossi said that within six months of his election, Toronto City Council would forward a motion to Queen’s Park requesting the implementation of voter recall legislation in the city.

“How we do it — what it looks like — and how it works — will all be developed by the citizens of Toronto in town halls and panels across the city,” said Rossi. “So let’s start talking about it — now and for the rest of the campaign. Voter recall is a tool to channel our disappointment into action — because action is what is needed at City Hall.”

Go Beyond Oil. Greenpeace International

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill has shone a light on the far reaching consequences that our addiction to oil is having on the natural world and on the climate. Instead of chasing the last drops of dirty oil, we need to kick-start the clean energy age. We have one planet, and if we’re going to protect it, everyone - from local communities, to businesses and governments - will need to come together to go beyond oil.

Is Rob Ford A Hypocrite?

On Thursday night, the mayoral frontrunner David Miller Rob Ford voted to start negotiations for another sole-source, long-term lease, with a company that runs food concessions along the western waterfront and in High Park.

“It’s extremely hypocritical,” said Sandra Bussin, the local councillor who has defended Tuggs in the past and taken considerable flak for it. “He railed against the Boardwalk Pub, yet on (this) he voted in favour of a sole-source contract without even asking a single question.”

Councillor Adam Vaughan added: “I guess when a friend of Rob’s is involved, it’s not a gravy train. When a councillor (he doesn’t get along with) puts something forward, it is.”

The Day of the Homeless

August 31, 2010   10am-2pm  170 Jarvis Street

On August 31, The Good Neighbours’ Club will be hosting the second annual Day of the Homeless to raise awareness of the issues facing the homeless, especially the elderly demographics which are on the rise as our population ages.
Last year, we initiated this event in response to the tragic death of Paul Croutch, a Good Neighbours' Club member who was beaten to death in Moss Park in 2005.
The event will be held from 10am-2pm at The Good Neighbours' Club, with presentations at 11.  After a brief presentation, we will invite the community to join us for a barbecue.
This year, we would like to focus on giving this vulnerable and often forgotten segment of Toronto's population a voice. Through our photography exhibit Expressions of Hope and Despair, attendees will experience the varying lives of these men. We will be displaying works both of and by our members, including portraits by well-known photojournalist Rita Leistner and photographer Nir Bareket.

Vague Response from Rob Ford

A Toronto resident was not impressed with the 'vague response' she received from Rob Ford after she sent him an email asking him about bike lanes in the city. Cathy Besso did get an actual reply from Mr. Ford, something I have to say is quite impressive considering the track record of Ward 27 councilor Kyle Rae who seems to think now that we've paid for his retirement party that a reply to an email is beneath him. However, I digress. Cathy got  a FORM letter from Rob Ford which according to The Star, stated;

“Insert vague response on policy,”
I suggest voters give Rob Ford a vague response at the polls on October 25th!
At last check Mr. Ford had not made any comment or response.

Bienvenue à Québec ~ A David Raetsen Production

Recently we traveled to Quebec City for a little vacation and to Montreal for our stag party and Divers/Cité. This is the video from the Quebec City portion of the trip. We had planned to go to St. Anne Canyon, but it is 40km outside of the city and unfortunately there was no convenient public transportation.

Rooftops in the old city of Quebec.
Quebec City is a designated UNESO World Heritage Site

There is tremendous history in old Quebec. It is really a must see in Canada. Of course there are also the street performers and the massive nightly multi-media Quebec City history show projected onto 81 grain silos. I'd love to go back sometime and stay at the famous Chateau Frontenac but there are many small boutique hotels as well as large chains to choose from, depending on your preference.  We stayed at the Hotel Marie Rollet in the old city. It was inexpensive, quaint and close to everything. I also recommend traveling by train. It is relaxing, stress-free and the views are really quite pretty.

Seduce Me by Isabella Rossilini

I saw this bedbug bit on the The Daily Show, it's pretty funny and I also strongly suggest you watch the duck, it cracked me up! Seduce Me by Isabella Rosellini is a series created for Sundance Channel that follows her Green Porno series.  I read a bit about it over at treehugger as well.

Neighbourhood comes together and kicks out religious haters

The obviously decent residents in the Dundas Street East and Greenwood Avenue area are speaking out against a freakish church group that they said has been targeting the home of a same-sex couple in their neighbourhood. Members of the Highfield Road Gospel Hall said they have the authority to preach the gospel, but neighbours said the church group's tactics amount to harassment.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Enforcement Campaign

Between Monday, August 23, 2010 and Wednesday, August 25, 2010, 54 and 55 Divisions will be joining together and enforcing bicycle and pedestrian rules of the road.
To date, eight of the 12 pedestrian deaths in Toronto have involved crossing the street mid−block. There has also been a noticeable increase in bicycle collisions involving motor vehicles.

The campaign will begin on Monday, August 23, 2010, at 7:30 a.m., at the intersection of Danforth Avenue and Broadview Avenue.

Police are advising pedestrians not to cross streets mid−block and to use proper signalized crossings. Cyclists must obey traffic laws and ensure the required bicycle equipment is in proper working order. Drivers must check blind spots prior to turning and to be alert when opening a car door into the path of traffic. “Road safety isn’t just a slogan, it’s a way of life. Cyclists and pedestrians must always obey the traffic laws," said Sergeant Jack West.

TTC Customer Service Advisory Panel Report Released Today

The Toronto Transit Commission Customer Service Advisory Panel released it's report today and made several recommendations and observations covering many topics including; "A Renewed Focus on Customer Service", "Communicating with Customers", "Internal TTC Communications", "TTC Employees", "Fare Media and Payment Systems", "TTC “Spaces”, Volunteers, and Communities" and "Responsibilities of the TTC and Its Customers".

One recommendations that I feel is extremely important states;
"The TTC must create a “Culture of Customer Service.” The TTC does not have a defined “Customer Service Vision.” As a result, there is not a unified call to action on improving the TTC’s customer service delivery."
The report is quite thorough and covers some pretty major topics and some things that may seem minor. One that I feel is important is this;

"OBSERVATION 2R
Many customers stand right in the doorway of the subway cars, which blocks and slows down passengers getting on or off.

RECOMMENDATION 2R: Review Subway Door Signage
The TTC should review the current signs that say, “Do not block doorway.” A more effective sign should be developed and used on all subway car doors."
I know many people have been waiting and hoping for some positive change on the TTC, we can only hope!

Ground the Canadian International Air Show

The Toronto Coalition to Ground the Air Show is a group of Toronto citizens who are concerned about the massive impact of the CNE's annual Canadian International Air Show on civic life.

Every Labour Day Weekend the skies over Toronto are filled with the ear-splitting, window-rattling sounds of low-flying warplanes.

This is an unnecessary and unwarranted intrusion into the lives of young children, people who have experienced the horror of war, those who work nights or are ill, or anyone who simply wants to enjoy the last weekend of the summer.

Airshows over urban areas are a gratuitous source of noise and air pollution, a threat to public safety, and idealize war.
