Calgary student association hung up on 'exclusionary' Canadian flag
Here's one for the ridiculous category! I cannot believe that this is even happening. Hopefully these idiots that make up the student association will take a look at the country they live in and realize how fortunate they are to be able to even have this debate. I say get a life and hang up the friggin flag already you losers.
A Mount Royal College student says it's ludicrous that his student association wants to ask for opinions before deciding whether it should re-hang a Canadian flag in its building.
"I don't see why this discussion even exists. It's just ludicrous," said Dylan Clarkson, a journalism student at the institution and a reservist with the Canadian Forces.
"When I've gone around talking to students, particularly other reservists, students that I know, they all want the flag back up there. So I'm wondering where this dissenting voice is coming from that they feel is so powerful they can't put the flag back up."
A Canadian flag used to hang from the ceiling of Wyckham House, the student services building owned and operated by the Students' Association of Mount Royal College. The flag was taken down during extensive renovations to the building last year and has not been returned to the same location.
CBC.Ca is now reporting that the idiot students have decided to hang a flag. See the update here.

Earth Hour II is a smash

Toronto's reduction of 455 megawatts was larger than the cumulative savings of the entire GTA during last year's event.
"Torontonians want to do what's right for the environment because they get it," Mayor David Miller told a cheering crowd at Nathan Phillips Square. "It's a privilege to be mayor of a city that gets it."
The increasing local popularity of Earth Hour, for which people worldwide were asked to turn off their lights between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., reflected its rapid growth internationally. Launched in Sydney by the World Wildlife Fund in 2007 to raise awareness of the perils of climate change, it spread to more than 35 countries, including Canada, in 2008.

CBC To Cut 800 Jobs
The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. plans to cut up to 800 jobs to make up for a $171 million shortfall in 2009-10.
CBC president and chief executive Hubert Lacroix announced the layoffs Wednesday in a broadcast to employees.
He said the public broadcaster also needs to sell $125 million worth of assets to make up the shortfall in operating costs.
The sale of assets depends on approval by the federal government. Lacroix did not say which assets would be sold.
The CBC is projecting 393 layoffs in its English services — including radio, TV and new media platforms — and 336 layoffs in French services. An additional 70 jobs will be lost at the corporate level.
Layoffs could start in May. The full number of layoffs could be reduced if some employees opt for retirement.Source: CBC.ca
Dogs (somehow) Eat Poisoned Cupcakes
"It's just awful, I just can't even imagine it," one woman told CTV Toronto Tuesday morning while walking her dog.
Another dog owner choked back tears as she spoke of the news. "I can't believe anyone would do this," she said.
Well these women need to believe it and they, and all dog owners need to realize this sort of thing will probably continue, at least until dog owners start taking responsibility for their animals and keeping them on a leash and under control.
I can't count how many times I've been in parks that have a separate off leash area and there is an irresponsible dog owner with a dog NOT in the off leash area with a dog running free. These idiots need to realize that not everyone is comfortable with these unpredictable animals running free doing as they please. This also explains how dogs eat the poisoned food, or whatever may be on the ground. Maybe if you watched and controlled your animal it wouldn't be able to eat poison or shit, or other garbage off the ground. And finally, clean up the dog shit your animal leaves on the ground. Personally I want a dog ban in the city, but I know that is unrealistic.

Canadian Aid Worker Murdered
Adam Khater, who worked for the Fellowship for African Relief, was shot to death at his home Monday night in the town of Kongo Haraza, near Sudan's border with Chad, said Mark Simmons, country director for the Ontario-based organization.
“He was shot by armed bandits at his home in front of his family last night because he could not provide them the satellite phone they were looking for,” Mr. Simmons told The Canadian Press by telephone from Khartoum on Monday.
The joint United Nations-African Union mission in Darfur confirmed the killing and said it was under investigation. It had no further details.
City Dwellers Pollute Less
When it comes to climate change pollutants, Toronto residents are among the greenest in Canada, says a new study.
The report, published in the April issue of the journal Environment and Urbanization, says metropolises, commonly denigrated as big, dirty places, are in fact spewing fewer greenhouse gases per capita than the rest of their countries.
"Blaming cities for climate change is far too simplistic," said author David Dodman, a researcher at the International Institute for Environment and Development in London, England. "There are a lot of economies of scale associated with energy use in cities. If you're an urban dweller, particularly in an affluent country like Canada or the U.K., you're likely to be more efficient in your use of heating fuel and in your use of energy for transportation."
Dodman found that the average Canadian is responsible for 24 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year, while Torontonians just 8.2 tonnes.
Congratulations Torontonians, but lets keep it up and cut the 8.2 tonnes even more!

'Deathbed confession' man charged
A US man who thought he was dying and confessed to having killed a neighbour in 1977 has been charged with murder after making a recovery, US media say.
James Brewer could now face the death penalty over the unsolved killing in Tennessee 32 years ago, reports say.
Convinced he was dying after a stroke, Mr Brewer reportedly admitted to police he shot dead 20-year-old Jimmy Carroll.
The 58-year-old, who had fled Tennessee after the killing, was arrested after his condition improved, reports say.

The Pope Vs. Condoms
This week, on his first visit to Africa, Pope Benedict said that "[AIDS] cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems". The Pope's statement is at odds with the research on AIDS prevention, and a setback to decades of hard work on AIDS education and awareness.
With powerful moral influence over more than 1.1 billion Catholics in the world, and 22 million HIV positive Africans, these words could dramatically affect the AIDS pandemic and put millions of lives at risk. Worldwide concern is starting to show results and a willingness by the Vatican to revise the statement - sign our urgent petition asking the Pope to take care not to undermine proven AIDS prevention strategies: http://www.avaaz.org/en/pope_benedict_petition
The personal beliefs of Catholics and all people should be respected, and the Pope does advocate for other AIDS prevention methods such as abstinence and fidelity that can be effective when combined with condom use.
The Catholic Church engages in a vast amount of social service work, including the care of those living with AIDS. But the Pope's claim that condom distribution is not an effective AIDS prevention mechanism is not supported by research. It's untrue, and if it diminishes condom use, it will be deadly.
The fact is, HIV and AIDS are prevented by condom use. There is no easy solution to the spread of this tragic disease, but condoms and education are the best known prevention combination and have not been found to increase risky sexual behaviour. That is why even priests and nuns working in Africa have questioned the Pope's statements.
We may not be able to ask the Catholic Church to change its broader position, but we are asking the Pope to stop actively speaking out against prevention strategies that work. It's important that people of all beliefs, especially Catholics, call on the Pope to exercise care in his leadership on this issue.
Sign below then spread the word to your friends and family - this petition could actually save lives: http://www.avaaz.org/en/pope_benedict_petition 25 million people worldwide have already died of AIDS, and 12 million children have been left without parents. If enough of us join this outcry, we will win an important battle in the struggle for a world without AIDS.

Vatican expresses disapproval of "Angels & Demons"
The Vatican might be gearing up for an official call for a boycott of "Angels & Demons," Ron Howard's big-budget follow-up to "The Da Vinci Code."
Avvenire, the Vatican's official newspaper, ran a story in Friday's edition noting that the Church "cannot approve" of such a problematic film. The Turin daily La Stampa, meanwhile, said the Vatican would soon call for a boycott of the film, though the same article also quoted Archbishop Velasio De Paolis, who warned against a "boomerang effect" that could call attention to the film and eventually make it more popular.

Group buys bus ads in Calgary
A group calling itself "God Exists" has purchased its own bus ads to counter the message of an atheist campaign currently running on Calgary buses.
The ads will be running on eight buses and two C-Trains for a month, starting Monday. They will carry the message: "God cares for everyone … even for those who say He doesn't exist!"
The campaign is a response to the Freethought Association of Canada's ads, currently running on Calgary Transit, that say: "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life."

British MP Denied Entry To Canada
Alykhan Velshi, a spokesperson for Immigration Minister Jason Kenney, said today Galloway has openly supported Hamas, classified as a terrorist group in Canada, as well as other terrorists.
And for that reason, Velshi said the minister is refusing to override the decision by Canada Border Security Agency officials under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

School accused of staging cage fights
The Dallas school system was rocked by allegations Thursday that staff
members at an inner-city high school made students settle their differences by
fighting bare-knuckle brawls inside a steel cage.
The principal and other
employees at South Oak Cliff High knew about the cage fights and allowed the
practice to continue, according to a 2008 report by school system investigators.
In an interview with the Morning News, Donald Moten, who retired as
principal last year, denied any fights were held.
"That's barbaric. You can't do that at a high school. You can't do that
anywhere," Moten said. "Ain't nothing to comment on. It never did happen. I
never put a stop to anything because it never happened."Source: Yahoo! News
If Mr. Motens language skills are any indication, my bet is that the fights really happened. Thankfully this moron has retired.

Toronto police to probe whether Tamil protest flags broke law
Toronto police are looking into whether flags carried as part of a protest by members of Toronto's Tamil community this week violated Canada's anti-terrorism laws.
Thousands of Toronto Tamils formed a human chain on Monday around the downtown core to call attention to the civil war in Sri Lanka and call for Canada to pressure the Sri Lankan government to engage Tamil rebels in ceasefire talks.
During the protest, an untold number of men, women and children of all ages waved the red flags of the Tamil Tigers, the militant group that has led the fight for an independent Tamil nation in the north of the South Asian island.

In The 'Big Surprise' Department
CIA interrogation techniques used on al-Qaeda suspects "constituted torture", according to a leaked report by the international Red Cross.
The findings were based on testimonies by 14 so-called "high-value" detainees who were held in secret CIA prisons.
They were interviewed after being transferred to Guantanamo Bay in 2006.
President George W Bush denied torture had happened and President Barack Obama has banned US agents from carrying out such practices.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has an international role in monitoring standards for prisoners and trying to ensure compliance by governments with the Geneva Conventions.
It was denied access to the prisoners until their transfer to Guantanamo Bay.
Bone tests on teenage athletes in south China have shown that thousands had faked their age, often in order to keep competing in junior events.
Tests on nearly 13,000 athletes found that more than 3,000 were older than their registered age, according to the Sports Bureau of Guangdong Province.
At least one athlete was seven years older than their stated age, but most were said to differ by a year or two.
The news comes as Guangdong prepares to host the 2010 Asian Games.
The investigation is the latest in a number of initiatives by the Chinese authorities to crack down on the practice of age-faking, which many experts believe is rampant.
And finally...
A vegetarian diet may help to protect against cancer, a UK study suggests.
Analysis of data from 52,700 men and women shows that those who did not eat meat had significantly fewer cancers overall than those who did.
But surprisingly, the researchers also found a higher rate of colorectal cancer - a disease linked with eating red meat - among the vegetarians.
Writing in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition the team said the findings were worth looking into.
Although it is widely recommended that people eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day to reduce their risk of cancer and other diseases, there is very little evidence looking specifically at a vegetarian diet.
Toronto Tamil Protest
Thousands of people from Toronto's Tamil community have gathered downtown to form a human chain through the core of the city to protest the civil war in Sri Lanka.
The protesters are forming a human chain that will start on Front Street, go up Yonge Street to Bloor Street, and head west down Bloor to University Avenue, where it will turn south back to Front.
The protest is meant to draw attention to the attacks by the Sri Lankan military on Tamils in that country's bloody civil war.

Agreeing With Peter Howell
The following is part of a review of Harrison Fords new movie Crossing Over. It is nice to see someone finally agrees with me on the talent of Harrison Ford...
Harrison Ford has been phoning it in for so long now, it's almost a trivia quiz question to guess the name of his last really good movie.
Do we have to go all the way back to Air Force One in 1997? Last year's Indiana Jones adventure doesn't really count, since Ford was just repeating himself, and even that movie gets by on goodwill alone.
His losing streak continues with Wayne Kramer's Crossing Over, a muddled multi-strand immigration drama that makes Crash look like some kind of masterpiece.

Priests to face 'sex drive tests'
The following story is from the BBC news, its actually from October 2008. My thought is this; If the church wants to weed out those with 'homosexual tendencies', and they won't allow women preists, then who will they have for priests?
The Roman Catholic Church has issued guidance for future priests to have psychological tests to weed out those unable to control their sexual urges.
A senior churchman said a series of sex scandals had contributed to the rewriting of the guidelines.
The authors said screening would help avoid "tragic situations" caused by what they termed psychological defects.
The guidance says the voluntary tests should also aim to vet for those with "deep-seated homosexual tendencies".

However, the agency has yet to make direct contact with the workers, including Laura Archer from Montreal, said spokeswoman Naomi Sutorius-Lavoie.
"We have not yet seen our colleagues, nor have we had the chance to speak with them since we heard that they were being released."

- Write to your MP and tell them that you want Canada to officially object to this punishment.
- Support human rights organizations like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International.

Duck & Cover
After nuclear weapons were developed (the first having been developed during the Manhattan Project during World War II), it was realized what kind of danger they posed. The United States held a nuclear monopoly from the end of World War II until 1949, when the Soviets detonated their first nuclear device.
This signaled the beginning of the nuclear stage of the Cold War, and as a result, strategies for survival were thought out. Fallout shelters, both private and public, were built, but the government still viewed it as necessary to explain to citizens both the danger of the atomic (and later, hydrogen) bombs, and to give them some sort of training so that they would be prepared to act in the event of a nuclear strike.

Ticketgouger Speaks Out
Ticketmaster is taking the offensive over allegations it's gouging customers. The company stands accused of redirecting on-line ticket buyers to a subsidiary that sells the same tickets at much higher prices.
But Ticketmaster vice-president Joe Freeman has claimed consumers are being treated fairly.
"Our clients, meaning venues, promoters and teams give us tickets, and trust us with tickets, to sell to the public," he explained. "And that is exactly what we do with those tickets. We do not provide or divert tickets to Ticketsnow or anyone who sells on Ticketsnow."
Alberta is now investigating whether it needs to change its scalping laws in response to the Ticketmaster case. The Federal Competition Bureau has also launched a probe.

Is CTV news insecure?

During a news conference today at Queens Park, Premier Dalton McGuinty was on the receiving end of a prank by CBC comedian Geri Hall. This is all over the news here in Toronto, however, if you caught it on the (immature, insecure?) CTV Toronto news you wouldn't have heard the name Geri Hall.
