30 St Mary Axe, also known as the Gherkin and formerly the Swiss Re Building, is askyscraper in London's main financial district, the City of London, completed in December 2003 and opened on 28 April 2004. It is 180 metres (591 ft) tall, with 40 floors. Its construction symbolised the start of a new high-rise construction boom in London. The building's name is its address, St Mary Axe being the street it is on.

The building was designed by Lord Foster, his then partner Ken Shuttleworth[1], and Arupengineers, and was constructed by Skanska of Sweden in 2001–2003.

Doodling 'may help memory recall'

As a 'doodler' who was reprimanded for it for years, I found this story from BBC News interesting.
Doodling may look messy, but it could in fact be a sign of an alert mind, a study suggests.

Plymouth University researchers carried out memory tests on 40 volunteers, asking them to listen to a phone call and recall names and places.

Doodlers performed 29% better than non-doodlers, the team found.

Experts said doodling stopped people from daydreaming, which was a more taxing diversion, and so was good at helping people focus on mundane tasks.

During the study, half of the volunteers were asked to colour in shapes on a piece of paper while they listened to a 2.5 minute telephone message.

Americans To See Pictures Of War Dead

News organizations will be allowed to photograph the homecomings of America's war dead under a new Pentagon policy, defense and congressional officials said Thursday.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has decided to allow photos of flag-draped caskets at Dover Air Force Base, Del., if the families of the fallen troops agree, the officials told The Associated Press.

Gates planned to announce his decision later Thursday, they said. The current ban was put in place in 1991 by President George H.W. Bush.

Naked Ladies Go Pageless

(Reuters)The lead singer of popular Canadian band the Barenaked Ladies, who was charged with drugs offenses in the United States last year, is leaving to pursue a solo career, the group said on Wednesday.
Steven Page, 38, was arrested in July 2008 and charged with drug possession after police found the singer with cocaine at an upstate New York apartment. In October, the charges were reduced to a misdemeanor.
"By mutual agreement, Steven Page will be parting company with the remaining members of Barenaked Ladies," the band said on its Web site, saying Page would be pursuing solo projects. Full Story

I think when anyone points out that something is "by mutual agreement" that really means he wants to stay, they want him out, and they have all agreed that saying they agree is more agreeable, which of course works best with this agreeable hardcore wonder bread bands image.

Gay Asians criticize Oscar speech's TV censorship

Gay Asians voiced indignation Wednesday after television broadcasts of the Academy Awards in their region censored the words "gay" and "lesbian" in speeches that called for equal rights for homosexuals.

The speeches by actor Sean Penn and writer Dustin Lance Black - who won Oscars for their work in "Milk" - were shown in full during live broadcasts of the Oscars that were screened across Asia on Monday morning.

But viewers who caught recorded telecasts in the evening on STAR, an Asian satellite TV service that says it reaches more than 300 million viewers in 53 countries, noticed that the sound was removed whenever both men mentioned "gay" or "lesbian."

Argentina expels Holocaust bishop

Argentina has ordered an ultra-traditionalist British bishop who denies the Holocaust to leave the country or face expulsion.
The interior ministry said Richard Williamson had been given 10 days to leave Argentina.
Earlier this month the bishop was removed from his post as the head of a Roman Catholic seminary in Argentina.
A row erupted in January after the Pope decided to lift Bishop Williamson's excommunication on an unrelated matter.
The Vatican said the Pope had been unaware of Bishop Williamson's views and had since ordered him to recant. Full Story

Okay, maybe I'm slow, but if you're the Pope, you know 'God's guy on earth', the be all and end all. He who KNOWS everything, the direct line to the big (yes, this is sarcasm) guy in the sky, how is it that you could be "unaware" that the jerkoff Bishop you are reinstating was, scratch that, IS a holocaust denier. How pathetic.

Yo Liz, Your Poem Sucks!

This comes from the Canadian Press and Yahoo! News. I'm not surprised, even though I'm not a poetry fan, I think it is safe to say this poem sucked, and was one of the most dry and boring things I've had to listen to in quite some time.

Millions watched Elizabeth Alexander read a poem last month at President Barack Obama's inauguration. But few, so far, have wanted to buy it.

Nielsen BookScan, which tracks about 75 per cent of sales, says Alexander's "Praise Song for the Day: A Poem for Barack Obama's Presidential Inauguration" has sold just 6,000 copies so far.

The poem was published Feb. 6 as a paperback by Graywolf Press with an announced first printing of 100,000 copies.

The inaugural reading by Alexander, a highly regarded poet, apparently lacked the spark of predecessor Maya Angelou, whose "On the Pulse of the Morning" - read at President Bill Clinton's 1993 inaugural - became a million seller.

Alexander was just the fourth inaugural poet, following Robert Frost, Angelou and Miller Williams.

Happy ValentiMes Day or how chocolate bars can help you lose weight.

Americas Greatest Threat?

Utah State Senator Chris Buttars recently called the LGBT community "probably the greatest threat to America...I know of." He went on to spew a series of vile insults including:

* Lesbian and gay relationships are "abominations."
* LGBT people are moving America "toward a society that has no morals."
* LGBT people will "destroy the foundation of American society."

Comments like this spread ignorance and fear – promoting an atmosphere of violence against LGBT Americans. They have no place in the discourse of our elected officials.

Please send the letter below to Sen. Michael Waddoups, President of the Utah State Senate, and call on him to condemn Sen. Buttars' remarks and censure him officially.

Can you say "White Trash"

This tidbit comes from 680news.com
A Mississauga woman, almost eight-months pregnant, has been charged with second-degree murder.
A 21-year-old man was stabbed at the suspect's baby shower on Monday afternoon.
Barbara Lanthier, 28, and her common-law husband were hosting a baby shower, when police said her drug dealer showed up, uninvited.
Peel Regional Police told 680News that was when the 21-year-old was stabbed, and someone called 911.
The victim was taken to hospital where he later died.
Her common-law husband was arrested for allegedly being an accessory after the fact.
Peel police Sgt. Marlene Murphy said it's a delicate situation, because pregnant or not, Lanthier is still a suspect.

Thank God the drug dealer wasn't invited, can you imagine what people would think! I feel sorry for the fetus, who will probably end up named Cleatus.

Phelphs Pot Probe Postponed

I read this morning that the sherriff investigating the Michael Phelps pot smoking debacle will not be pressing any charges, on Phelps or anyone else at the party.
I also read that Advertising Age is reporting that Subway restaurants are going ahead with plans to use Phelps as their pitchman. I guess America is not quite as obtuse as I thought.
In our Phelps Pot Poll, 100% of respondents thought Phelps pot smoking was no big deal.

Muslims aren't all bad....

The founder of a US television station aimed at countering stereotypes of Muslims has been arrested and charged with beheading his wife, local media reported.
Muzzammil Hassan was charged with second-degree murder of his wife, Aasiya Hassan, whose decapitated body was found Thursday by police at the Bridges TV station in a Buffalo suburb in New York state, The Buffalo News reported Monday.

Happy Family Day

Ontario's Family Day takes place on the third Monday of February and it is not a statutory holiday. It was established on October 112007, following the 2007 fall Ontario election campaign when Premier Dalton McGuinty was re-elected, and the first one was on February 182008. Its creation raised Ontario's number of public holidays to nine per year.[6] However, since it is not recognized at the Federal level, all Federal employees (such as public servants and postal workers) still work on this day (or take vacation). Also, unionized workers whose collective agreements do not yet include this holiday will continue to work on this day. All students from public and Catholic schools in Ontario have a break on this holiday, as well as most private school students.

Provincial America: How sweet!

Is it just me or is America stuck in a bit of a time warp? Come on people get real and join the rest of the world in the 21st century. Really, who cares about a few college kids and Michael Phelps smoking dope?

It seems the facist pigs, I mean, the Richland County Sheriff's Office have charged two people, the guys who were renting the house where the pot party occurred.

According to one of the lawyers representing one of the accused in the heinous crime, "After they arrested him, they didn't ask him, 'Where did you get the marijuana?' or 'Who sold it to you?' Almost all the questions they asked him were about Michael Phelps."

The lawyers would not name their clients, who each face up to 30 days in jail and a US$200 fine if convicted on the pending charges.

Street Racing Cop Sets Great Example!

I was surprised that the officer is a female, and am wondering if the car seized was her own? Was she driving a police cruiser? Was it seized?  Is she off work with pay?  You bet she will be, if she is even off work.  The probably stuck her behind a desk and now she's getting a little work vacation.

From 680news:

Brant County OPP say they clocked an OPP officer in her cruiser going 65 kilometres over the speed limit.

The OPP say the alleged incident happened while the Detective Constable was on duty, but her speeding had nothing to do with her work at that moment.

The officer was charged with street racing, her car was seized and her drivers license has been suspended for seven days.

Mayor Miller Retiring?

Tomorrow, the city of Toronto is going to announce its new tax plan and the rumour is that property taxes may increase 4%.  I guess Miller is planning on leaving politics, because I, along with thousands of other Torontonians will not sit by and put up with this wasteful city council and mayor any longer.

I was once a Miller supporter, but as usually happens with politicians, they seem to forget the people who elected them and, in my opinion, Millers time is up.

We will see what happens tomorrow.

Tom Cruise Website

Maybe its just me, but I think it is lame for Tom Cruise to have to promote his website with google video advertisements like the one that is on this page (at the time I am writing this). If you scroll down and watch the right side of the page just below the 'past posts' there is an ad box and its currently showing an ad for Tom's site. Go ahead, click it, you know you want to.
My point is only this; why does someone like Tom Cruise need to promote his website? Is he not already famous enough? I think he is, otherwise I'd be saying stuff like; "Tom Cruise, from films such as 'Risky Buisness', 'Rainman', 'Cocktail', and 'Mission Impossible'.  Oh well, click it anyway, I make money if you do.

The WTF Blanket (Snuggie Parody)

Phelps Pot Pickle

Michael Phelps, the American Olympic swimmer was suspended for three months and Kelloggs also is not renewing his sponsorship deal after pictures surfaced on the internet showing Phelps smoking what looks like a big bong.

Do you think the swimming authorities overreacted by suspending Phelps for three months? What about Kelloggs?  I noticed on Wikipedia that he was charged with impaired driving at age 19, maybe he has a substance abuse problem in the making?

What do you think? Take a moment and vote in our new poll at the top right of this page. I should mention that for this poll you may select more than one response.

Apparently our last poll was lame so I ended it early.  And as you might have imagined the vast majority of us have had enough snow!
